Broadband services on board vehicles
MBI's Collective Mobile Solution (CMS) is an exclusive solution for the development of innovative broadband service platforms on board vehicles for use with any type of communication network. The on-board system uses the innovative “smart routing” technology developed by MBI to select the best communication network from those available (UMTS, satellite, Wi-Fi, TETRA, etc). Interruption to service is therefore avoided.
The network is selected according to rules that take into account costs and priority. In addition, they can also be defined using a series of parameters, including georeferenced parameters, for instance so as to respect commercial treaties that apply only in certain areas.
The CMS is highly flexible and is therefore a solution for all operators wanting to provide connectivity, entertainment, diagnosis and maintenance services on board vehicles, in particular on vessels, trains and buses, where a high number of users and/or devices need to be connected.
The CMS includes the Onboard Service Gateway (OSG), an on-board module which acts as communication point between the user devices and the modems connected to the transport network; and the Ground Service Centre, a central system which acts as connection and interoperability centre for the service access points, from both on-board and distant locations, including telecommunication operators, service providers and value-added service providers.
The multicast transmission is based on the push system implemented by MBI’s MDF, which enables content of any type and size to be distributed from the service centre to the terminals in a highly efficient way. The quality of service management is integrated into the network selection system and can be adapted to situations in which several users share limited bandwidth. The bandwidth is regularly and automatically allocated according to the network used, the user profiles and the application used.
The solution is completely software-based and can therefore easily be integrated with other on-board systems. The on-board components are very “light” and can be run on low-power hardware. In addition to vehicles, the software can also be used in fixed positions (eg residences and hotels). The efficient use of bandwidth and the integration with satellite systems ensure that the solution is suitable for any type of installation, including those in areas where no digital infrastructure is available.
