The HUMAN Project aims to
develop and test a set of tools and services to support surgeons
that operate on patients in prison.
The HUMAN Project has enabled the testing of
wireless satellite and WI-FI connections for videoconferencing and teleconsulting within the prison system. It has also involved the development of the Patient's
Clinical Record as well as biomedical devices for acquiring and
analysing biological data. The system has been tested in two European prisons located in Italy and Spain.
MBI's role in the HUMAN Project was to develop, install and monitor the wireless satellite and WI-FI network used to link the sites involved and provide them with videocommunication, teleconsulting and secure transmission of clinical data. Given the unique nature of the application scenario, every effort has been made to develop a guaranteed system for secure and confidential data transmission.
The HUMAN Project (IST-2001-33483) was co-financed by the European Community under the 5th Framework Programme. It started on 1st September 2001 and lasted a total of 14 months. The HUMAN Consortium consists of companies (MBI, EUTELSAT SA, Synapsis), prisons (Seconda Casa Circondariale Palermo, Generalitat De Cataluna), research institutes and health institutes (Scuola Superiore di Studi Universitari e di Perfezionamento Sant'Anna, Università degli Studi di Palermo - Azienda Universitaria Policlinico, Consorci Sanitari de Terrassa).
