Eutelsat will present innovative satellite applications for mobile solutions and their market opportunities at SAT Expo Europe just a few days before the launch of Europe’s first S-band satellite W2A from Baïkonour. For the first time in Europe, satellite transmissions will use a frequency range suitable for mobile solutions similiar to the range used for UMTS transmissions. An integrated satellite and terrestrial network will provide new services on a wide range of terminals, from handheld devices to terminals on board vehicles, all over Europe, both in cities and in rural areas.
The variety of traditional multimedia satellite services will be extended to include mobile services, such as radio and TV. Most importantly, a set of real-time mobile information services based on an interactive datacast system will be available all over Europe to a potential market of 400 million vehicles.
To gain access to the services, vehicles need to be equipped with a small antenna and a terminal compliant with the new European regulations on DVB SH. Equipped vehicles will become more than just means of transport, as they will be able to receive and transmit information. Applications available on board vehicles will range from entertainment to information and positioning services. By integrating the technology with the GPS navigation systems and with the GALILEO system in the future, georeferenced information can be received and transmitted in real time for applications such as traffic reports, map updates for navigation devices, eCall, anti-theft systems and even ‘pay as you drive’ to pay the tolls.
Vehicle fleet managers and car manufacturers will be able to monitor their vehicles from a remote location to localise them and carry out diagnosis or software updates. The new S-band services will also open the way to applications for public security, emergency services and emergency management, as well as for environment and traffic monitoring.
The first S-band satellite infrastrucutre will be commercialized by Solaris Mobile, a joint venture between Eutelsat Communications and SES Astra set up in 2008 to develop mobile satellite services.
The conference programme can be found below. Sabino Titomanlio, MBI's R&D Project Manager, will give a speech during the session dedicated to technology, and will present the results of one year of preparation and experimentation of the DVB-SH pilot network in Tuscany.
